Sarah Vaughan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Sarah Vaughan from Newark won a talent contest at the Apollo Theater in 1942. She sang in Earl Hines's big band, in which Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker also played, and later named those two as her most important teachers. She took the harmony and the lines of bebop into her singing. In 1945 she made Lover Man with Gillespie and Parker. Her voice had an enormous range, from deep to very high, and she could make it sound like an instrument. Her nickname was 'Sassy' or 'The Divine One'. Her 1954 album with the trumpeter Clifford Brown is regarded as a high point. She kept performing until the late 1980s.
