Samara Joy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Samara Joy McLendon grew up in the Bronx in a family of gospel singers. She discovered jazz only during her studies and in 2019 won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald are her most important role models. Her warm, rich voice and classic repertoire from the Great American Songbook brought her a large, young audience through social media. In 2023 she won the Grammy for Best New Artist, as the second jazz musician after Esperanza Spalding. On Portrait (2024) she sings with an octet of her own.
