Ann Burton
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Ann Burton, born Johanna Rafalowicz in Amsterdam, sang in clubs in the 1950s and in Germany for American soldiers. Billie Holiday was her great example, which can be heard in her slow, intimate phrasing. In 1967 she made the album Blue Burton with the trio of the pianist Louis van Dijk. Ballads & Burton (1969) followed. In the 1970s she became popular above all in Japan, where she performed a great deal and made records. She became one of the best-known Dutch jazz singers. She died in 1989.
