1989
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
1989 · Until her fourth album, Red, Taylor Swift saw herself as a country musician. On her fifth album she opted wholeheartedly for pop. She began writing in 2013, during the Red Tour, and wanted a coherent sound: if you chase two rabbits, you lose them both. In 2014 she moved from Nashville to New York. The title refers to her year of birth and to the synth-pop of the 1980s, with Annie Lennox and Peter Gabriel as inspiration. Max Martin, Shellback and Jack Antonoff co-produced.
The album was released on 27 October 2014. It sounds dense with synthesizers and drum machines, without the acoustic arrangements of the past. Shake It Off, Blank Space and Bad Blood became number ones on the American Hot 100. The reviews praised the production and the lyrics, although some felt the synth-pop displaced her singer-songwriter side. 1989 won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2016.
