Jazz in the Netherlands

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Jazz in the Netherlands · In 1926 Theo Uden Masman founded The Ramblers, the best-known Dutch dance orchestra of the pre-war years. In 1935 and 1937 it made records with the American saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, who was living in Europe at the time. After the Liberation, the Dutch Swing College Band, founded in 1945, played traditional jazz. In the 1950s the singer Rita Reys became internationally known as 'Europe's First Lady of Jazz', later often with the pianist Pim Jacobs. In the 1960s an avant-garde of its own emerged around Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker, with the Instant Composers Pool (1967) and the Amsterdam Bimhuis (1974). From 1976 Paul Acket organised the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, which has been held in Rotterdam since 2006. Later came Candy Dulfer, the New Cool Collective of Benjamin Herman and the guitarist Reinier Baas, among others.
