Cécile McLorin Salvant

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cécile McLorin Salvant was born in Miami, the daughter of a Haitian father and a French mother. She studied classical singing and Baroque music in Aix-en-Provence and discovered jazz there. In 2010 she won the Thelonious Monk vocal competition. She names singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Bessie Smith as examples and sings old, often forgotten songs from vaudeville and the blues, alongside her own work. In doing so she critically shows how women are portrayed in those songs. She has won several Grammys and received a MacArthur fellowship in 2020.
