Dreams and Daggers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Dreams and Daggers was released on 29 September 2017 on Mack Avenue Records, as a set of two CDs or three LPs. Singer Cécile McLorin Salvant combines recordings from the Village Vanguard with studio recordings from the DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Pianist Aaron Diehl, bassist Paul Sikivie and drummer Lawrence Leathers accompany her, and the Catalyst Quartet plays the strings on six tracks. She co-produced and made the drawings and handwriting in the booklet herself.

The repertoire consists of standards and a few original songs, all about love and heartbreak. An AllMusic reviewer gave it five stars and Stereophile called it the best jazz vocal album in ten years. The album earned her a second Grammy, for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and a nomination for an NAACP Image Award.
