Blue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the success of Ladies of the Canyon, 1970 was a turbulent year for Joni Mitchell. Her relationship with Graham Nash was over, she had made a trip through Greece and Europe, and then an intense affair with James Taylor began. The material for Blue came from that time, recorded in late 1970 and early 1971 at A&M Studios in Hollywood. She wrote and produced everything herself. Many songs originated on the Appalachian dulcimer, an instrument she had come to know at a folk festival in 1969.

The accompaniment is sparse: acoustic guitar, piano and dulcimer, supplemented here and there by Taylor and Stephen Stills. Carey, inspired by a man she met in Greece, was the first single. The songs look sideways at love and loss, although she herself rejected the label confessional. Blue was a success on release and is now seen as her high point, with great influence on the singer-songwriters who came after her.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Little Green and notice how little lies beneath the voice: mainly guitar, so that every word can be heard clearly.
