Green

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Green is R.E.M.'s sixth studio album and was released on 8 November 1988 on Warner Bros. After Document the band had fulfilled its contract with I.R.S. They wanted to leave because the records were poorly distributed abroad. Warner offered complete creative freedom. The basic tracks were recorded between 24 May and 5 July 1988 at Ardent Studios in Memphis, with producer Scott Litt. Sessions followed in Bearsville, in New York State.

The group left the jangle pop of earlier records behind. Guitarist Peter Buck said they were writing major-key rock songs and switching instruments, and a mandolin, among other things, was added. Stipe asked his bandmates to stop writing typical songs. The album consequently sounds varied, with ironic pop songs such as Stand and Pop Song 89 and political themes in the lyrics and packaging. Green was a success with critics and public, and the band toured with it for eleven months.
