Document
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Document was released on 31 August 1987 on I.R.S. Records and was R.E.M.'s fifth album. It was the first record the band produced together with Scott Litt, a collaboration that would last for years. After Lifes Rich Pageant the vocals became more intelligible and the sound harder. The band also added new instruments: a dulcimer in King of Birds and a saxophone in Fireplace.
The One I Love became the first hit in the American top ten and the album reached number ten on the album chart. A Rolling Stone reviewer found it the band's best record up to then. Other critics wrote that with Document the group discovered the world outside itself, with more humour and more anger. The song It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) was called by one reviewer the most sardonic apocalypse ever.
