Lifes Rich Pageant

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lifes Rich Pageant is R.E.M.'s fourth studio album and was released on 28 July 1986 on I.R.S. Records. After a break from touring, the band wanted to get away from the murky, dense sound of the previous album. Producer Don Gehman had worked with John Mellencamp and got the job. In April and May 1986 they recorded at Mellencamp's Belmont Mall Studio in Indiana. Gehman had the band work with overdubs and layered arrangements, which was new to them.

The result sounds more direct and harder, with room for piano, organ, accordion and banjo. Michael Stipe's voice is much clearer in the mix. Cuyahoga is about a river in Ohio that caught fire several times because of pollution, and Fall on Me also has an environmental undertone. On the cover are drummer Bill Berry and two bison. The album was well received and was, up to then, the group's most successful record in the United States.

Listening tip. Listen to Fall on Me and notice how clearly Michael Stipe's singing now comes forward in the mix.
