Fables of the Reconstruction

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fables of the Reconstruction is R.E.M.'s third studio album and came out on 10 June 1985. After two albums with Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, the band wanted a different producer. Michael Stipe thought of Van Dyke Parks, but it became Joe Boyd, known for folk rock with, among others, Nick Drake and Fairport Convention. For the first time the band recorded outside the United States, at Livingston Studios in London. The weather was bad and Boyd's precise way of working, with hours of mixing, clashed with the band's spontaneous approach.

The sound is darker and murkier than on earlier records. The lyrics draw their themes and figures from the Gothic of the American South. There is more variety in instruments, with strings, brass and banjo. The reviews were positive and praised the folk elements in particular. Driver 8 has since become one of R.E.M.'s best-known and most covered early songs.
