Dizzy Gillespie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dizzy Gillespie · John Birks 'Dizzy' Gillespie grew up in Cheraw, South Carolina. As a young trumpeter he took Roy Eldridge as his example. He played with Cab Calloway and in the jam sessions at Minton's, where he developed bebop with Charlie Parker. Gillespie knew harmony well and explained the new chords to other musicians at the piano. In 1945 he made the records with Parker that fixed the style. After that he led a big band in which, in 1947, he took on the Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo, which set Afro-Cuban jazz in motion. With his puffed-out cheeks and his trumpet bent upwards at an angle he became a recognisable figure and an ambassador of jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. Follow the trumpet in its highest register: fast, precise and full of surprising turns.
