Bird and Diz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bird and Diz is a studio album by the saxophonist Charlie Parker and the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. It was mainly recorded on 6 June 1950 in New York, with Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass and Buddy Rich on drums. It is the last studio record the two made together. In 1952 it was released as a collection of 78 rpm singles on Clef Records, a Verve label.

The producer Norman Granz was known for large line-ups, but here you simply hear the classic bebop format: saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass and drums. Bloomdido opens the record. In 1952 a DownBeat columnist gave the album four stars and wrote that it shows how alive this music still was. The record has been reissued several times, and the CD versions contain extra studio takes.
