Miles Davis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Miles Davis grew up in East St. Louis and came to New York in 1944 to study at the Juilliard School. Dizzy Gillespie was his example, but Miles chose a quieter, more restrained tone. He played in Charlie Parker's quintet. He changed jazz several times: with Birth of the Cool (1949), with his quintet with John Coltrane (1955), with Kind of Blue (1959), with his second quintet (1964) and with the electric music of Bitches Brew (1970). He often used a mute, which made his sound vulnerable. He repeatedly chose young musicians who later became bandleaders themselves, such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and John McLaughlin.

Listening tip. Notice the space between the notes: Miles plays little, and every note counts.
