Neo-soul
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Neo-soul is R&B that harked back to the soul of the 1970s, with Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, among others. Badu recorded Tyrone (1997) live, with harmonies from jazz, and the warm sound of the Rhodes piano also reappeared. On her solo album (1998), Lauryn Hill combined doo-wop choirs, a soul groove and rap.
