Tomasz Stańko
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The trumpeter Tomasz Stańko was born in 1942 in Rzeszów. In 1962 he founded the group Jazz Darings with the pianist Adam Makowicz, inspired by the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. From 1963 to 1967 he played in Krzysztof Komeda's quintet, including on Astigmatic. Miles Davis was also an important example. For ECM he recorded Balladyna in 1975, with the bassist Dave Holland, and in 1997 Litania, a tribute to Komeda. For Soul of Things (recorded in 2001) he chose the young trio of the pianist Marcin Wasilewski. His tone is dark and hoarse, with long pauses. He died in Warsaw in 2018.
