Urszula Dudziak
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Urszula Dudziak was born in 1943 in Straconka, in the south of Poland. She began as a singer of jazz standards and from the 1960s sang in the group of the violinist Michał Urbaniak, whom she married. She developed a style of her own, often without words: she uses her voice as an instrument, with high flourishes, rhythmic sounds and electronic effects such as echo. In 1973 she moved to New York with Urbaniak. Papaya (1975) became her best-known song. Later she sang with Gil Evans's orchestra and with the Vienna Art Orchestra. She is one of the best-known jazz singers in Poland.
Listening
Listening tip. Hear how the voice sings no words, but sounds like an instrument with effects.
