Zbigniew Namysłowski
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The alto saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski was born in Warsaw in 1939. He first played piano, cello and trombone before switching to the saxophone. With his quartet he recorded Lola in London in 1964, for Decca: one of the first Polish jazz records to be released in the West. In 1965 he played on Krzysztof Komeda's Astigmatic. Namysłowski wove Polish folk dances into his music, such as the oberek and the kujawiak, often in unusual metres of five or seven beats. You can hear that on Winobranie (1973) and Kujaviak Goes Funky (1975). He continued to perform well into old age and died in 2022.
