Krzysztof Komeda

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Krzysztof Komeda's real name was Krzysztof Trzciński, and he was born in Poznań in 1931. He trained as an ear, nose and throat doctor and used his stage name to keep his jazz work separate from his job. In 1956 his sextet played at the first jazz festival in Sopot. Komeda sought a European jazz with Slavic melodies, slow tempos and plenty of space. His album Astigmatic (1965), with Tomasz Stańko and Zbigniew Namysłowski, is regarded as the high point of Polish jazz. He wrote the music for films by Roman Polański, such as Nóż w wodzie (Knife in the Water) (1962) and Rosemary's Baby (1968). After a fall in Los Angeles he fell into a coma; he died in Warsaw in 1969.
