ECM sound

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

ECM sound · ECM, Edition of Contemporary Music, was founded in Munich in 1969 by the producer Manfred Eicher. He recorded many records at Talent Studio in Oslo with the sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug. The label acquired a recognisable sound: clear, with a lot of space and reverb, and often calm in tempo. The sleeves, too, with photographs of landscapes and austere lettering, are typical. A Canadian magazine called the music 'the most beautiful sound next to silence', and ECM adopted that as its motto. European musicians such as the Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and the German bassist Eberhard Weber appeared on ECM, but also Americans such as Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny. Jarrett's solo improvisation at the Cologne Opera House on 24 January 1975 became the best-selling solo album in jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the space around every note: the reverb is part of the music here.
