Jan Garbarek
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Jan Garbarek, from Norway, heard John Coltrane on the radio as a teenager and decided to become a saxophonist. In the 1960s he played with the American composer George Russell, who was then living in Scandinavia. From 1970 he recorded for ECM and became one of the label's best-known voices. His tone is clear, long-sustained and heavily reverberant, with influences from Norwegian folk music. He played in Keith Jarrett's European quartet. With the vocal ensemble The Hilliard Ensemble he made Officium (1994), on which he improvises over medieval church music; the album was a great commercial success.
