Keith Jarrett

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Keith Jarrett, from Allentown, Pennsylvania, was a child prodigy at the piano and later named Bill Evans as one of his models. He played with Art Blakey, Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis. At ECM he recorded solo records from 1971 and, from 1973, solo concerts that were entirely improvised. The concert at the Cologne Opera on 24 January 1975, organised by the seventeen-year-old Vera Brandes, was played on a poor grand piano; Jarrett therefore stayed in the middle register and with repeated figures. The Köln Concert became the best-selling solo album in jazz. He led an American and a European quartet, with Jan Garbarek, and from 1983 the Standards Trio. After two strokes in 2018 he can no longer play.
