The new piano trio

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

The new piano trio · The piano trio of piano, double bass and drums is a classic jazz line-up. Around 1960, the trio of Bill Evans with the bassist Scott LaFaro and the drummer Paul Motian showed that the three players can play together as equals, instead of bass and drums merely accompanying. From the 1990s a new generation gave the trio a sound of its own. Brad Mehldau played songs by Radiohead and Nick Drake. The Swedish Esbjörn Svensson Trio, e.s.t. for short, used effects and electronics, played in rock venues and in 2006 became the first European jazz group on the cover of the American magazine DownBeat. The Bad Plus played Nirvana. The Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan combines folk music from his country with complex rhythms from metal. Svensson died in a diving accident in 2008.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how bass and drums do not merely accompany, but join the conversation with the piano.
