Esbjörn Svensson
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The pianist Esbjörn Svensson grew up in Västerås in Sweden. With his boyhood friend, the drummer Magnus Öström, and the bassist Dan Berglund he founded the Esbjörn Svensson Trio in 1993. He named Keith Jarrett and classical music as important influences. The trio played quiet ballads and loud pieces with effects, such as a distorted bass and electronics, and performed in rock venues. In 2006 e.s.t. became the first European jazz group on the cover of DownBeat. In June 2008 Svensson died in a diving accident near Stockholm.
