Tigran Hamasyan
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The pianist Tigran Hamasyan was born in Gyumri, Armenia, and moved to Los Angeles with his family as a teenager. In 2006 he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk piano competition. In his music he combines Armenian folk songs and church music with jazz, electronics and the heavy, complex rhythms of progressive metal. On A Fable (2011) he plays solo; on Mockroot (2015) with bass and drums. He also sometimes sings along wordlessly with his piano. He performs a lot in Europe, including in the Netherlands.
