Luys i Luso
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Luys i Luso means Light from the Light in Armenian and is the seventh album by pianist Tigran Hamasyan. He made it to commemorate one hundred years of the Armenian genocide. For three years he collected and arranged Armenian sacred music, from sharakans of the fifth century to hymns from the early twentieth century. In October 2014 he recorded the album with the Yerevan State Chamber Choir, conducted by Harutyun Topikyan, and with Manfred Eicher of ECM as producer.
The music is written for piano, prepared piano and voices. Hamasyan lays improvised piano and vocal percussion over the arranged choral singing. Surb Astvats tells the story of Christ, and Hayrapetakan Maghterg comes from Komitas. The work was subsequently performed in a hundred churches around the world. Hamasyan himself calls it a musical world in which tradition, contemporary composition and improvisation come together.
