Bill Evans

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist Bill Evans, from New Jersey, studied classical music and played both Bud Powell and the French composers Debussy and Ravel. In 1958 he spent eight months with Miles Davis; his calm, open chords shaped the sound of Kind of Blue. He co-wrote Blue in Green. With the bassist Scott LaFaro and the drummer Paul Motian he formed a trio in 1959 in which the three players converse as equals. In June 1961 the trio recorded Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby at the Village Vanguard; eleven days later LaFaro was killed in a car accident. Evans's way of playing chords, without the root note, became standard in jazz piano.

Listening tip. Listen to how bass and piano play melodies at the same time, as if they were talking to each other.
