New Jazz Conceptions
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
New Jazz Conceptions · Bill Evans made his debut as a leader in September 1956 for Riverside. The guitarist Mundell Lowe had played a demo tape of Evans to the producer Orrin Keepnews. Keepnews and Bill Grauer then heard him several times at the Village Vanguard and offered him a contract. Evans had to be persuaded to record.
The record contains eight trio recordings with bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Paul Motian, interspersed with three very short piano solos: I Got It Bad, My Romance and the first version of Waltz for Debby. Three of Evans's own pieces are also included, among them Five, which Evans went on playing throughout his career. Reviews were good, but only 800 copies were sold in the first year. Evans then did not record a record of his own for more than two years.
