Undercurrent

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Undercurrent · After the death of the bassist Scott LaFaro in July 1961, the pianist Bill Evans recorded nothing for months and did not even play. When he began again in October, it was as an accompanist for others. Only with this album, recorded in the spring of 1962, was he a bandleader again. His partner was the guitarist Jim Hall. The duo knew each other from the circle around George Russell.

The programme consists of standards and pieces by others, with no original pieces by Evans. My Funny Valentine is a brisk number here, whereas it is usually a heavy-hearted ballad. Evans and Hall both play chordal instruments, but they avoid things getting too busy, because they leave a great deal of space and every note counts. The DownBeat reviewer called it one of the most beautiful records he had ever heard. The sleeve shows a photograph by Toni Frissell.
