The Mourning of a Star

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Mourning of a Star · Keith Jarrett recorded this album in 1971 with his regular trio: bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian. In July and August of that year, over five days, he made enough music for three albums, together with saxophonist Dewey Redman. Redman does not play on this record, but the sessions formed the transition from Jarrett's first trio to the later quartet. Atlantic Records released the album that same year.

The music partly follows the traditional avant-garde piano trio of earlier records, but the sound is richer and more colourful. Jarrett also plays soprano saxophone, flute and other instruments. Traces of You features him as a soprano saxophonist. Standing Outside is by himself and All I Want is by Joni Mitchell. In JazzTimes, Kenny Werner wrote that the album is an early sign of the combination of melodic music and adventurous free improvisation.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Traces of You and notice the soprano saxophone: here Jarrett is not only a pianist, but also a soloist on another instrument.
