Life Between the Exit Signs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Life Between the Exit Signs is Keith Jarrett's first jazz album as a leader. It was recorded on 4 May 1967 at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York and released in April 1968 on Vortex, a subsidiary label of Atlantic. It was the first time Jarrett, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian played together. Producer George Avakian made sure he could choose his own musicians and left the music completely untouched.

The three played differently: Haden had played with Ornette Coleman, Motian with Bill Evans, and both influences can be heard. The programme consists of original pieces and a Cole Porter standard, with Lisbon Stomp as the opener. Critics heard a pianist who already had a recognisable voice, although the group was not yet the unit that would follow later.

Listening

Listening tip. In Lisbon Stomp, listen to the opening melody and the fast runs with which the pianist begins his solo.
