Pat Metheny

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The guitarist Pat Metheny, from Missouri, was already teaching at Berklee in Boston at the age of nineteen. He played in the group of the vibraphonist Gary Burton and in 1976 made Bright Size Life for ECM, with Jaco Pastorius. From 1977 he led the Pat Metheny Group with the keyboard player Lyle Mays, with a spacious sound, guitar synthesizer and Brazilian influences. Ornette Coleman was one of his great role models; in 1986 he recorded Song X with him. Metheny has won twenty Grammys, across twelve different categories. He also plays acoustic and free music, and works with instruments built especially for him.
