Watercolors
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Watercolors is guitarist Pat Metheny's second album. He recorded it in February 1977 and ECM released it in June. Manfred Eicher produced and Jan Erik Kongshaug was the engineer. The quartet consists of Lyle Mays on piano and occasionally synthesizer, Eberhard Weber on bass and Danny Gottlieb on drums. The guitarist himself plays six- and twelve-string electric guitar and a fifteen-string harp guitar.
AllMusic praises his softly drawn, asymmetrical guitar style, in which echoes of Jim Hall, George Benson, Jerry Garcia and country guitarists can be heard. According to the reviewer, that style was already very much his own at this early stage. This album also marks the beginning of his long collaboration with Mays.
