New Chautauqua
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
New Chautauqua is guitarist Pat Metheny's first solo album. He recorded it in August 1978 and ECM released it in April 1979. Manfred Eicher was the producer and Jan Erik Kongshaug the engineer. On the record he plays everything himself: six- and twelve-string electric guitar, acoustic guitar, a fifteen-string harp guitar and electric bass. The layers are thus built up not by a band but by a single musician.
The reception was mixed. The Richmond Times-Dispatch wrote that there is much to enjoy, but that the album is above all an exercise in arrangement and effect. As pure music, the paper said, it drifts away, taking the listener's attention along with the music.
