80/81
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
80/81 is a double album recorded in four days in May 1980 and released later that year on ECM. Pat Metheny leads a quartet built around the rhythm section of Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette. On saxophone, Dewey Redman and Michael Brecker alternate. Manfred Eicher produced. In the summer of 1981 the guitarist toured Europe with the album's full line-up.
Critics found the record clearly more jazz-oriented than his earlier work. AllMusic wrote that his standing in the jazz world rose sharply, because he made no concessions at a time when others carried on chasing commercial success. Don Heckman praised Brecker's playing in Two Folk Songs, as well as the guitarist's tone and restraint. JazzTimes included the album in a list of the best jazz albums of the 1980s.
