Folk Songs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Folk Songs was recorded in November 1979 and released in February 1981 on ECM. Bassist Charlie Haden plays here in a trio with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and guitarist Egberto Gismonti. It was their second album together, after Magico from 1980. Garbarek plays soprano and tenor saxophone, Gismonti guitar and piano.

The album contains six pieces. Folk Song is a traditional, Bodas de Prata and Cego Aderaldo are by Gismonti, Veien is by Garbarek and For Turiya is by Haden himself. Equilibrista is also by Gismonti. Scott Yanow of AllMusic called it one of the better ECM recordings, full of sombre original pieces, improvisations in which jazz and world music come together and atmospheric interplay. According to him the record works well as background music and also when you listen to it attentively.

Listening

Listening tip. In For Turiya, listen to Haden's bass, the piece he wrote himself, and notice how saxophone and guitar play around it.
