As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls was recorded in September 1980 and released in April 1981 on ECM. Guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Lyle Mays made the album as a trio with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos. They had collected leftover compositions that they did not consider suitable for their group. The title was thought up by a friend, who felt that only this name suited the vagueness of the music. The album contains a twenty-minute title piece and four shorter pieces.

For the first time, synthesizers are heard extensively on one of his albums. He wanted to combine them with acoustic instruments so that you cannot hear the difference. Thanks to overdubbing, he plays lead guitar, rhythm guitar and bass himself. September Fifteenth refers to the day on which Bill Evans died, an important influence on both musicians.
