Jack DeJohnette

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jack DeJohnette from Chicago began as a pianist and became a drummer. In the 1960s he played in Chicago with AACM musicians, then in Charles Lloyd's quartet with Keith Jarrett. From 1969 to 1972 he was Miles Davis's drummer, including on Bitches Brew. For ECM he recorded with groups of his own, such as Special Edition. From 1983 he was for thirty years the drummer in Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio, with the bassist Gary Peacock. His playing is free and melodic, with a great deal of colour on the cymbals, and suits both standards and free improvisation. He died in 2025.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the cymbals: a cloud of sound instead of a rigid beat.
