New Directions

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

New Directions is a 1978 album by Jack DeJohnette, recorded in June and released shortly afterwards by ECM. The group is a quartet: DeJohnette himself on drums and piano, the trumpeter Lester Bowie, the guitarist John Abercrombie and the bassist Eddie Gomez. Manfred Eicher produced, Jan Erik Kongshaug engineered. Two tracks, Dream Stalker and One Handed Woman, were written jointly by the whole band.

Reactions varied. DownBeat called it a deeply satisfying album that swings in its own wandering yet sharp way. AllMusic found the music somewhat dull because of its heavy use of space, with less trumpet and humour from Bowie than hoped for, but named strong moments from Abercrombie and DeJohnette.
