Lester Bowie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The trumpeter Lester Bowie grew up in St. Louis and named Louis Armstrong as his first example. He played in blues bands and came to Chicago in 1966, where he became a member of the AACM and of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. On stage he wore a white doctor's coat. His playing was full of humour, with smears, growls and quotations from pop music, but also with the warmth of old jazz. As early as The Great Pretender (1981) he played pop songs; from 1984 he did so with Brass Fantasy as well, a group of nine brass players and drums. He was also often heard in the Netherlands. He died in 1999.
