AACM and the Chicago avant-garde
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
AACM and the Chicago avant-garde · In May 1965 the pianist Muhal Richard Abrams and a group of musicians on Chicago's South Side founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, AACM for short. The association organised its own concerts, taught young people from the neighbourhood and encouraged its members to write their own work. The saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell recorded Sound in 1966, with bells, whistles and small percussion alongside wind instruments. His group grew into the Art Ensemble of Chicago, which lived in France from 1969 to 1971 and performed with painted faces under the motto 'Great Black Music – Ancient to the Future'. Anthony Braxton recorded For Alto in 1969, a double album for unaccompanied saxophone. In this music silence, space and tone colour are as important as notes.
