Anthony Braxton

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Anthony Braxton from Chicago joined the AACM in 1966. In 1969 he recorded For Alto, a double album for unaccompanied alto saxophone, the first of its kind. He named John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman among his influences, alongside composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage. Braxton gives his pieces no titles, but diagrams and numbers. He developed his own systems for composition and improvisation and wrote for groups from a single player to orchestras and opera. He also likes to play standards. He taught at Wesleyan University for more than twenty years. In 1994 he received a MacArthur grant.
