Five Pieces (1975) · Five Pieces 1975 was recorded on 1 and 2 July 1975 at Generation Sound Studios in New York and released on Arista. Anthony Braxton plays several instruments here: sopranino and alto saxophone, clarinet, contrabass clarinet, flute and alto flute. He was accompanied by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul. In 2008 Mosaic Records included the record in the box set The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton.
The album mixes a well-known standard with original compositions. You Stepped Out of a Dream is by Nacio Herb Brown and Gus Kahn. The other pieces are by Braxton himself and bear composition numbers such as 23H, 23G, 23E and 40M. The piece 23E lasts well over seventeen minutes. Scott Yanow gave the record four and a half stars and praised the tight, alert group and the strength of the compositions.
