New York, Fall 1974

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

New York, Fall 1974 was recorded in the autumn of 1974 at Generation Sound Studios in New York, on 27 September and 16 October, and released on Arista. All the music is by Anthony Braxton himself. He plays sopranino saxophone, alto saxophone, clarinet, contrabass clarinet and flute. On four tracks he is accompanied by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jerome Cooper. In 2008 the record was also released in the box set The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton by Mosaic Records.

The line-up changes from piece to piece. Richard Teitelbaum plays Moog synthesizer in Composition 38 A, and in Composition 37 a saxophone quartet is heard with Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake and Hamiet Bluiett. Leroy Jenkins plays violin in the last piece. Scott Yanow gave the record four stars and called the great variety a perfect introduction to Braxton's complicated but logical music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 30-EGN (Opus 37) and notice how the saxophones play with one another, without a rhythm section underneath.
