Dave Holland

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The bassist Dave Holland grew up in Wolverhampton and played in London, where Miles Davis heard him in 1968 and brought him to New York. Holland played during Miles's transition to electric music, on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. He then played in Circle with Chick Corea and Anthony Braxton, and recorded Conference of the Birds (1972) for ECM, with the saxophonists Anthony Braxton and Sam Rivers. Later he led a quintet and a big band that became known for their complex yet swinging compositions in unusual time signatures.
