Life Cycle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Life Cycle is a solo album for cello, recorded in November 1982 and released a year later on ECM. Dave Holland is known above all as a bassist. Here he plays a different instrument, and for many listeners that is a lesser-known side of his musical talent. Manfred Eicher produced the album and Martin Wieland recorded it.

The album opens with Inception and contains a series of pieces under the title Life Cycle, called Discovery, Longing, Search and Resolution. These are followed by, among others, Sonnet, Rune, Troubadour Tale, Grapevine, Morning Song and Chanson Pour La Nuit. In his review for AllMusic, Brian Olewnick wrote of an enchanting solo concert for cello and recommended the album.
