Emerald Tears

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Emerald Tears · Dave Holland recorded this solo album in August 1977 and released it the following year on the ECM label. It is a record full of bass solos: only a single double bass is heard, with no accompaniment from other musicians. The eight pieces show what a bassist can do on his own with tone and rhythm.

The critical response was positive. AllMusic called it a fine showcase for Holland, one that would appeal above all to lovers of the upright bass. DownBeat gave the album three and a half stars and praised his rich, polished tone and his throbbing, percussive sensitivity, with a melancholy, romantic touch. The reviewer did feel, however, that the album at times seemed like a Music Minus One record turned inside out.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Emerald Tears and notice how a single unaccompanied double bass can carry melody and rhythm at the same time.
