Chanson
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Chanson · The French chanson is the song in which the lyrics are central, sung with a great deal of expression, often with a small orchestra or just a piano or accordion. Édith Piaf became world famous with La vie en rose (1947), and the Belgian Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour wrote songs in the 1950s and 1960s that were translated all over the world. Scott Walker and David Bowie recorded songs by Brel, and Dutch kleinkunst also looked to the chanson.
Listening
Listening tip. In La vie en rose, hear how Piaf's voice carries the lyrics, with the orchestra in the background.
