European art music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
European art music · Europe gave us the harmony of art music: major and minor, chords with fixed functions, melodies in regular phrases, and music that was written down. The colonists also brought hymns, marches, dances such as the waltz and the polka, and the song for voice and piano in the parlour. Sheet music and the piano made this music commonplace in nineteenth-century America too. Ragtime owes its notation, its form and its piano to European music, and Tin Pan Alley and the spirituals sung in several parts also built on it.
